Hello!

Found this thread after attending the sudoku at MSO for the second time (and coming 4th for the second year running!) - I've really enjoyed it, and would love to do more of this kind of thing. Does the community have events like these semi-regularly? Would anyone be able to guide me where to go for more competitive puzzle solving?

Thanks,
Dan

Hello,

We have an annual in-person event (the UK Open) which is held annually (dates TBC but from memory, around March/April), usually in London. Details get posted on this message board closer to the time, and previous contests can be seen in various threads - e.g this year's are here: https://forum.ukpuzzles.org/viewtopic.php?t=2825

In addition to this, there are lots of online competitions. They are held over a few days and work by having a password-protected problem sheet, with a timer starting when you retrieve the password. You'll then usually have 60-90 mins to print, solve and enter the answer keys for as many puzzles as you can manage. We have an online UK Sudoku Championship around July each year, and in the first half of the year there are various other contests - the two main series I'm aware of are:

WPF Sudoku GP - https://gp.worldpuzzle.org/content/sudoku-gp

Logic Masters India Sudoku Marabharat -
https://logicmastersindia.com/SM/2026sm.asp

This year's LMI puzzle sets can be found lower down the page under schedule, the GP sets can be found in the "Archive" section (though.you might need to sign up for a (free) account to see this).

I think all of these events involve a mix of "classic" sudoku and "variants" (e.g killer sudoku). The rules around variants are published in instruction books beforehand, and usually lead to some different/more varied logic to what you'd find in classics.

Enjoy!
