A bit similar to eithdirections sudoku: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1925, with a difference which is that the placements of words are highlighted in the grid.

Re: Three different questions?

Why do you say it's not wishable to give clear border? [...] no repeated digits, no blank cells in solution, regions of size N where N is the number of distinct symblos to be placed, etc... [...] I first of all I said, it's not possible. But if you think it is, can you just define it, like you thin...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

About sudoku variations as defined by drsudoku: The majority of the solution should require thinking about the 3 unique placement constraints and no other constraints. I'll try to explain why I feel very discomfortable with this argument as part of a definition of a category of puzzles. I understand...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

I think it is now a good occasion to enlarge the discussion about sudoku puzzles at WPC, too. I haven't anything to say about it directly, but I've some thoughts related: I think both arguments can be valid: "WSC puzzles (Sudoku puzzles) should be removed from WPC, because we don't want too much ove...

Re: Three different questions?

"Or the 2011 WSC round 12, which consist of a real cube (not a 3D representation on a 2D paper)." I feel that anything involving physical handling/dismantling/constructing/manipulation is a distraction and a gimmick. I generally agree with that, but round 12 of WSC 2011 is for me a kind of exceptio...

Re: 3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)

I'm not sure I agree. The rules describe those constraints as planes, and to me they feel much more like "regions" than they do rows or columns, and I think RealShaggy's point starts to capture why. Ah sorry, I didn't get what you said before. I understand now. For this case, I would be interested ...

Re: 3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)

Yes that's a nice way of thinking about it. I'm admittedly a little tired right now, but my initial thought was that you don't really have rows and columns in this puzzle in the same way as what we are normally used to. Another way of looking at it is that rows/columns usually intersect several dif...

Re: Three different questions?

For example, we definitely need to have a 2-dimensional grid of cells, When I read this, I remembered as sudoku from 2006, which was 3D and which might qualify as sudoku... I put it in an own thread. Or the 2011 WSC round 12, which consist of a real cube (not a 3D representation on a 2D paper).

Re: Three different questions?

I took DSM as an example, but I could have taken UKopen sudoku tournament or Polish sudoku championship, too. In both cases there were much more authors who contributed than for DSM. I could also have mentionned India, with the notable exception of WSC2017. But as we can see now, none of the sudoku ...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

But it's not a problem to say latin square is not a sudoku. Why not? Obviously you have some artificial border in mind. Yes, I have some border in mind (I was an sudoku author, so when organizers asked me some puzzles for sudoku competition and let me free about the type of variant I can create, it...

Re: Three different questions?

In my oppinion it's not possible (or at least not wishable) to give a clear border, but to let organizers have some freedom here. Anyway, one could give some corner points, so organizers have something they can hold on to. Why do you say it's not wishable to give clear border? I think the exact opp...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

In your example, you make big steps and it is easy to draw a line between. So why should it always be the case that we should be unable to say no at each incremental adjustment of the rules? Short answer: Because the number of possible Sudoku variants is infinite, maybe nondenumerable. [think of a ...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

A provocative thesis: If we always change the classic Sudoku rules only minimally, after 1000 steps we come to the conclusion that Masyu is a Sudoku, because we can't overcome ourselves at any step to say "no". I think even if you divide the path between sudoku and masyu in 1000 steps, there will b...

Re: Irregular Sudoku [New Example]

It is a nice example. I already thought about limits for irregular sudoku, more in term of minimum number of regions. Here I mean regions by connected subset of cells that are distinct from rows and columns. Some irregulars have only 7 or 8 such regions (1 or 2 regions are indeed rows or columns) an...
