Re: US Puzzle Championship (27 Aug 2011 1pm ET)

My first USPC and very enjoyable, although a rather disappointing performance. I think I scored around the 120 mark, but started 5 or 6 puzzles, panicked and then didn't have time to go back and complete any of them. My key error was not reading the last rule for Kaku Rogue - 'exactly one negative n...

Re: Reflections on the croco-puzzle ladder?

Going back to the question of tie-breaks which has been discussed previously, last week reminded me that more weight is given to harder puzzles when it comes to a tie-break, as the difference in times is likely to be larger, the harder the puzzle. I'm in two minds as to whether this is fair or not, ...

Re: Puzzles at the Mind Sports Olympiad in London next Frida

Do you know if you can just turn up on the day or do you need to enrol in advance? There is a small chance I may be able to attend.

Re: 2011 UK Sudoku Championship (11-12 June 2011)

Ditto on the congratulations to Tom and David and many thanks to Mike, Liane and all authors and to Alan for the smooth running of the contest. I have to agree on the Classics. After spending 1 minute on the first one, I decided to avoid them, although I definitely made a strategically poor move spe...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Aaargh! Just missed out. Well played Tom. I managed to sneak the Hochauser which I did first but was a minute to slow on the Japanische Summen. Good game though. My nemesis (Rundweg) counted me out of any tie-break as you say Chris, otherwise total time might have been quite interesting. My biggest ...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Well, I think the rest of this week for me is all about trying to avoid a whitewash! Well played Tom, and sorry I didn't give you a better match. A couple of close puzzles (although I note on one puzzle, you had technical problems, had to do it twice and still beat me by 2 seconds!), but I've fehlve...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Well played drsteve. I had the advantage of knowing your (excellent) time on the Doppelstern today and realised I needed to get very lucky to beat it, so I had a go. Sadly it was sufficiently tough to mean logic rather than luck was always going to be the winner :) I then made a mess of the Pillen a...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?
CURSES!!!! All to play for tomorrow, then (if I've counted correctly)
I think I need two points tomorrow to take it to a tie-break so my chances are slim - and I don't believe that you'll continue your run of Fehlversuchs ....!

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Thanks Steve. I've just booked my travel for Thursday and rail network permitting, I should be home with a couple of hours to spare, so hopefully no problem. To be honest, I'll be quite happy if I haven't already lost 6-0 by Thursday :)

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

I might struggle to complete the puzzles on Thursday this coming week, unless I can do them on Wednesday night or the wifi on Virgin trains holds on for long enough (unlikely ....). I'll endeavour to do them of course, but just a warning. Not sure how this might affect my match.

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

I would also be happy to take part, although I fully expect to be a relegation rather than a championship contender.

It may even drive me to purchase a mouse and a keyboard with a proper numberpad to try to improve those times!

Re: croco-puzzle

Thanks Chris - good update!

It's taken a while to get there and a pretty poor performance today to celebrate it (note to self - don't start a puzzle 20 minutes before a meeting just because the top solvers only took 2 minutes)! Still, onwards and upwards from here ....

Re: Puzzle Jackpot - LMI January Puzzle Test on 8th/9th

My strategy was to concentrate on the 90 point puzzles, although this dramatically backfired when I spent the majority of the time not solving them successfully!

Very enjoyable set of puzzles despite the disappointing result.

Many thanks. I note it was the puzzle with the fewest submissions and the lowest success rate, so it obviously foxed quite a few people!

Re: LMI Screen Test #1

I made the same mistake on the little skyscraper test.

Could you give me a hint on the cell Sudoku please? Spent a few minutes on it yesterday afterwards and couldn't see the breakthrough, but am guessing it must be do-able in 60 seconds, so I'm missing something.

Re: LMI Screen Test #1

Very enjoyable and definitely recommended. That half hour went far too quickly - if only I'd had 10 more seconds on some of the puzzles and not panicked in the review period!

Re: LMI November Sudoku Contest (13-14 Nov 2010)

I am one such Brit who learnt of the contest via these pages. I've been meaning to say hello for a while (I will get round to submitting a post on the welcome forum eventually!) I became aware of the UKPA following this year's Times Sudoku Championships and have had a very enjoyable experience on th...
